AW4 + 231 to replace a 42RE & 242 in a buddies GC
While he lurks for now, I told him Ide ask you guys.
Its about swapping in a AW4+231 from a donor XJ into a friends '94 GC he just bought that has the 4.0, but has the 42RE & 242 connected.
I also told my friend to join up here. As there is a plethora of knowledge in this forum.
He read up on some of the transmission problems relating to the 42RE, considering his trans likes to act up when it feels like it...like not shifting back down into first and stalling, or not shifting out of first until 3k rpm, or "searching" until 3k rpm.
And from what we found, people say that the 42RE is pretty much junk. So my friend is pretty much "SOL" as they say. Because it sounds like hes either gonna have to pay someone to diagnose and then fix/rebuild it, buy another one, or do some other sort of strange procedure that tricks the trans into shifting at a higher pressure, which could in turn, make things worse.
None of us, have any experience in working on transmissions. Besides the regular maintenance stuff.
I told him that the AW4 is a venerable trans and that there would probably be a whole lot more aftermarket support for the 231.
Is this something do'able?

mechanically it should be fairly easy to swap the tranny & T/C. The hard part will be wiring, and adjusting linkages. The wiring end of it would need: Transmission Computer, appropriate plugs, and a wiring diagram. Other than that it should be fairly "bolt in"
It is doable, especially if you are good with mechanics and/or electronics!
