Default Automatic Shift Lock

I bought a 99 XJ for my daughter's first car.
I found out that the Auto shift lock does not work....that is....the gear selector can be moved out of park WITHOUT having to depress the brake and even with ignition in the lock position and the key out!
If I were driving this Jeep I wouldn't care, but since it will be for my daughter and she is just learning to drive, I need to get this fixed.
Can anyone point me in the right direction of what to check and replace to fix this?

My 98 is the same way. I have no idea how to fix it though because, like you, it doesn't bother me. I can see why it's concerning being as it's for your daughter. Maybe someone else has some insight on it

ill be watching, i usually find a way to kill it on other cars and want to here.
id hate to get stuck on rr tracks with a dead batt huh?
a real reason is she should be taught to restart quik . some people actually think you need to go to park and hit the brake to start. ive been in cars where the driver did that on a highway and i was terrified.
bump into neutral, start in a split second and get going b4 you get rearended!

And out of left field comes nujeepguy.... WHAT?! How did we get to being stuck on RR tracks with a dead battery? This is an actual concern?

Here's the Shift Interlock R&R procedures from the FSM.

that was an example, extreme to make the point. i dont like to need keys, even batt to drift my car on my driveway, but it could get more serious. we lived w/o this stuff for a long time!

As always, thanks Ken.

but, you left out the part about the railroad track. I'm disappointed in you.

Default Thanks!

Thank you CCKen!

PS. If you come up with something about Rail Road Crossings let me know. There are several around where I live!

Here's a good chore for you 54. Somewhere along the line a TSB came out that installed a shift lock system in Jeeps that didn't have the system from the factory. Can't remember what years it went back to

See if you can find the TSB - I saw it once but lost the link.

I looked through the 88 and 90 TSBs. Nada. Recall maybe IIRC?
