Is this fine to use for the trans? My manual says mercon, but when I went to the store it said mercon was for use for ford vehicles, so I just figured just to get the trans fluid thats used for chrysler vehicles. This is fine to use in the t-case right?

Also which rear diffs are limited slip? I have a 91 cherokee limited, and all I know is that I have a dana 35 or chrysler 8.25. I am asking, because I didn't want to go get reg diff gear oil and put it in a lim slip diff and screw it up.

atf+4 is what chrsyler uses, and as far as the rear end you most likely don't have a limited slip. when you take the cover off you'll find out.

ATF+4 can be used in your trans and t-case, I have used it in mine for years. There are many who feel only Dextron/Mercon should be used in the trans.

The easiest way to know if you have a Dana 35 or Chrysler 8.25 is if you have ABS if you do then you have a Dana 35 if not you have a 8.25 the limited sip question can be answered by jacking up the rear and trying to spin the rear tires in park if they turn you do not have a limited slip if they don't turn easily then you have a limited slip.

You do not want ATF+4 in your transmission....
The AW-4 once it has been run with Dexron in it, it wants to keep Dexron in it. The problems occur when you switch from the Dexron to ATF+4. The friction modifier additives in the ATF+4 do not play well with the Dexron.

Chances of you having an 8.25 in a 91 are VERY,VERY,VERY slim.

my shop uses valvoline max life atf, and it is approved for mercon and dexron in all its forms and numbers, atf+4 and most others. i have a chart on what it covers at work. does not cover cvt trans, and some imports. i'd just buy that, i've never had a problem

anything that goes into the AW4 should be Dex/Merc III compliant. lots of new ATFs are DMIII/IV+ATF4

The owners manual says Dex III and the FSM also says DexIII So for mine it gets DexIII and will continue to get that as long as they continue to make it.

In the 91's they mostly came in D35 and rarely an 8.25. Best way to tell is if the bottom of the pumpkin is round or flat. Round D35, flat 8.25..

As for limited slip you can tell pretty easily with the cover removed or you can get the tag numbers off and I can tell you if it's limited slip or not. The tag will be attached on the left hand side of the pumpkin to the wo bolts when you are looking at the diff cover. Also if you have a limited slip on one of the bottom bolts there will be a tag that says it has a limited slip. You could be safe and just get a good diff gear oil that has the limited slip additive already in and call it good.

We have been using ATF+4 for years at the dealership I work at and have not had a problem yet.

Thanks for the help everyone .

Answers that one! I have ABS so I have Dana 35 then. I figured it was unlikely that I had limited slip, but wanted to check and make sure. Pep boys didn't have any 75W-140 gear oil, and didn't want to check a chance putting reg gear oil in and seizing up my rear end.

And I guess I will give some feedback on the ATF+4 whenever I change the trans fluid.
