What kind of fluid do i need for the NP249 case, and differentials on a 5.9 GC ?
Hey guys i bought a 5.9 Jeep a couple days and im going to change all the fluids in it. The only thing is i dont know much at all about the 5.9's only about my moms 4.0 mostly.
I asked on other forums the same questions and they said ATF+4 is fine for the NP249 TC, however one guy posted a picture of this MOPAR bottle that sayd NV245-NV247-NV249 and said my 249 requires dealer only fluid..
I saw this after the fact of changing the fluid to ATF+4 earlier today.. Does the NP249 really require this dealer only fluid or is ATF+4 ok ? I dont want to ruin my transfer case so i dont care if its a few bucks more. I know in the manual is said dextron 2 or ATF fluid...
Another thing i need to change is the rear and front differential oil. Altho i dont know what weight oil to use for the front and rear. Could someone who knows for sure tell me what i need to buy ? What is the process of changing the fluid anyway ? I know how to losen and tighten the bolts in a certain pattern, but what kinda spray do i need to clean the gears and stuff with ? How do i re-seal the plate ? Does it requires a gasket or is it some kinda glue or something ?
The Tranny pan is leaking fluid also and i belive the gasket needs changed. All i do is unbolt the pan and take off the old gasket and put the new one and filter on right and then fill it back up with atf+4
I also need to know what kind of spark plugs/wires/cap and rotor the 5.9 needs ?
I've done all this to my mom's 4.0 but i dont know what kind of oil hers needs for the differentials. I know the rear diff is leaking so i need to fix the seal and change the oil..

Front and rear diffs use 75w-140 with the full-time T-case(NP247/249)
The T-case fluid is shown in the manual as automatic transmission fluid(so ATF+4). I wish I could comment on the Dealer only fluid you are asking about, but I have no idea what it is. I suspect it is like a torque drive fluid(which is ATF, but has a different additive package), but that is only an educated guess.
I don't have a 98 ZJ manual... but I seriously doubt that it has any sort of recommendation for Dexron in it. Chrysler doesn't like paying for any fluid it doesn't own. I would love to see a scan of a page in the manual recommending Dexron(GM product) to be used in any actual Chrysler product.
For resealing the diff, just use RTV. I use blue or black, whichever I have on-hand. just clean the inside out with brake cleaner. there is no special pattern for tightening the cover bolts.
yes changing the tranny filter is that easy. And yes use ATF+4 for the refill
