Default any T-case experts?

I have a 89 XJ with the NP231. When driving the transfer case will "pop out of gear". I have to pull over and put the selector in P then select drive again and it will go until hitting a bump. I have replaced the transmission mount. I have adjusted the linkage, but it still happens. The only way to stop it is to hold down the T-case selector.(the 2HI, 4LO, 4HI selector).
My question is, is this just simply a worn out linkage that can be repaired or replaced with a Novak? Or is there something wrong with the T-case that is worn and letting it pop out?

Sounds to me like the Shift fork in the T-case is bent.. And should be replaced..

Transfer case rebuilds are not that complicated. Do yourself a favor and replace the consumable parts in the case and replace the bushings in the linkage and you will be as good as new.

Default Shifter fork

Thank you for the reply Nick and Blue XJ. I thought about that yesterday. I think it may be a good idea. Where can I get a rebuild kit or shifter forks? Thank you...

You can get the rebuild kit from most good auto parts stores. Tranny shops if they sell just parts or I think quadratec sells a complete T-case over hall kit..

Here you go I found a good kit for you..

Also I would stay away from eBay for the kit, you might find a cheaper one ther but the quality may not be there. That and if it's missing something your kinda screwed..

Thanks again Nick. This particular kit does not have the shifter forks. Would this be a Trans shop item or do you know?

Check with our vendor Gerroffroad. He has access to many factory replacement parts. He might be able to get the shifter bushings too.

Are the shifter bushings the same as the shifter pads? I think the forks are bent because it keeps popping out of gear and making a zzzzzzzzzzz sound. This makes sense because I have to hold it in gear to drive it. IDo you think the chain is still good? It does not sound like jumping teeth. How do I contact Gerroffroad?

Thank you Blue!

I would say the chain is most likely good. Takes alot of beating on to hurt them..

the bushings and pads are different items..

Replaced shifter linkage with new Novak linkage. Still popping out but not as bad. is there some detents in the t-case or is it probably the shifter fork that is broken or bent?

I read another thread somewhere, similar problem, cause turned out to be a broken motor mount. Not sure how that works exactly, but probably easy enough to check the mounts.

Thank you dogsled. I have replaced the tranny mount. not sure if I want to replace motor mounts or pull the T-Case for inspection. Both not fun.
