Ok i just bought a jeep and took it to a shop to get fixed and ive been driving it about 3 months without a catylitic converter... and the people at the shop told me its ill legal to not have one on there...

Not having a cat(or something that looks like one) is illegal in all 50 states.

Yes, it is illegal to remove the cat. It is against federal law. It's a no no on the forum to discuss the removal of the cat, but seeing as how you did not remove it, the mods may leave it alone. Either way you should have it replaced so the emissions system on your Jeep will function properly.

Sorry to make it a no no... for i didnt know that... and i was going to make this jeep into a rock crawling rig so i was kind of wondering if i needed it bc i heard you did... but i guess you dont need it if its a crawling rig WHICH IT IS GOING TO BE...

It actually states that any vehicle manufactured with one from the factory must have one. It does not differ from on road vehicles to off road vehicles. Meaning that even on trail only vehicles, they are required if they were manufactured with one from the factory.

See when i bought the jeep it didnt have one on there and i didnt know you needed one... and well ive called up the guy where the jeep is in the shop and he says hes put one on so im good to go...

i do believe that you guys are wrong on the law being in all 50 states here in michigan its legal to have it removed. You just can not have it done by a shop and a shop can not do any work in front of where the cat was and this was right from the mouth of an exhaust shop owner and employees at a few others

State laws are overruled by the federal regulations on the removal of the catalytic convertor. It is against federal law.
