a Shock is what controlls the rate of which the spring can rebound or move up and down. has nothing to do with the vehicle weight, just helps control the spring speed for a more smooth ride and suspension movement. It helps to hold the springs stable and keep it from bouncing continuously. It has NOTHING to do with supporting the vehicle.

I know how it works in a working system, what I asked about was one where the springs were messed up, but given how hydraulics work, if the spring is broken, the whole thing will just sag to whatever the spring will hold.

making sure that all 4 tires are inflated the same measure @ all 4 wheels to wheelwells. i had a coil go on mine and it was 3/4 of an inch and i did notice it when i was driving. coils and leafs will sag and measuring is the only way to know for sure!
