Default Aftermarket Stereo Problems

Firstly thank you for helping me out...

1989 jeep cherokee
4.0 automatic transmission

I went to instaIl a new Head unit in my jeep. The PO had just ripped the other one out so there were wires hanging everywhere. I've looked everywhere for a solution but I suppose I just need to bounce ideas around.

The unit only works when the headlights are on. Which means the wire is going through the switch. It even dimmed the unit. I verified both wires. I did not use the dimmer wire for the power. I'm trying to figure out what the PO did to the wiring to cause it. Trying to figure out if I need to run some new wires or what.

The other thing is that I tried to load a cd while it was on. It kept flashing on and off. I'm guessing that it was trying to pull too much power and tripping out.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

I've already got the wiring diagram. Just can't figure out what could be up with it.

You got the power wire hooked up wrong first its hooked up to illumination instead a constant 12 volt.

your constant power wire from radio should be hooked to the pink wire from jeep,Apparently you have it hooked to orange/black. which is illumination.

That's what I double checked. It is definitely hooked to the pink wire.

I have. I also have the Haynes manual which is where I got the original wiring diagram. I have training in electronics and a couple years of experience in automotive. I realize that the orange/black comes through the headlight switch. I'm thinking that the PO may have spliced the pink wire into somewhere coming from the headlight switch. That's why I was thinking that I could run a new wire. I just didn't know where.

Will do. I believe I already have something plugged in there. I believe it's the horn. PO wired the horn to a pull switch (go figure) I'll pull it apart and let you know. Worst case scenario I can take a picture if it still doesn't match up. Thank you.

Run it straight to battery then just make sure you shut radio off everytime or you will kill the battery .

I finally got it fixed. I found a fuse holder at advanced auto parts that plugs into the fuse block and expands into two slots. Just wired the 12V constant and plugged it into the acc slot. And like magic it worked. So got it powered on and no sound :/ had to rewire the whole thing but it is working now. Will post pics tomorrow!
