The reason is that the XJ rear spring is at an angle. When you have a spring at an angle, then the low side is shorter than the upper. This equalizes the forces on each half and allows a longer spring to make a smoother ride. When you force the upper side down, it will be taking more than half of the forces and will cause that end of the spring to bend too much which will take the temper out of the spring and cause it to sag eventually.
I love how poeple think lift blocks are the worst thing ever to happen....
Ive heard so many danger warnings about them coming out and causing other problems, so why does dodge and ford have big blocks under the back of their 3/4 ton trucks from the factory?
Ive got two no-no's in our xj, i bastard packed with add-a-leaves for 3" and am running 3" blocks....so far i think the front 5.5" coils have sagged.

i just did another last weekend with s10 leafs.
99 xj sagging 2 inches, took a set of 99 s10 4 pack leafs (3 with an overload) and used the middle 2.
i left the xj main installed and removed all others.
inserted the middle 2 s10 leafs and bolted it all back up with new u-bolts and center pins. (had to drill out the main xj leaf pin hole to 3/8).
so just main xj and 2 s10 leafs.
he's now 3 inches over stock. and the main lower s10 leaf had the built in spring clamp that doesn't actually clamp tight, so there's room to flex now.
this sunday we're gonna add a 2.5 inch spacer in the front coil to even it out.
all in, less than 150 bux. (300 with new shocks).

i see alot of people using the s10 leafs. i talked to a local guy who suggested a late 90's durango springs. after installing them it is a bit stiffer but it make for a nice off-roading experience.

you won't gain anything with YJ leaves. Stick with the S10 leaves

expect them to sag after a couple months. I had RC's AAL and they saged little over 1.5"s only a month and half after I installed them. i contacted rc and they gave me new full leaf packs at cost.... just for future reference...
