I have a 1994 cherokee, this morning when i went out to drive off the jeep wouldnt move at all, it just sat there reving, later in the day after it warmed up it would move but would always rev up before finally moving very slowly, does it in reverse and drive.

jeep is a automatic any thoughts?

 

check fluid in trans according to directions

 

You will need at least 3 qts of ATF if you are lucky.....don't try and move it before you check the fluid or you will burn up the trans if it's really low on fluid.

 

1. Verify that the transmission fluid is not burnt. Should be "red" in color, not brown.

2. Verify the level of transmission fluid is correct on the dipstick, with the engine fully warmed up and the transmission fully exercised.

If the above checks out, it is possible that you have a problem with the line pressure on the transmission. This could be verified by a shop with the correct equipment. If that is the case, it means you are probably going to have to get a different transmission. If that is where you are heading, consider a salvage yard tranny. Economical and plug and play. It is usually the route I go when repairing an older vehicle.

 

ok thanks, i did notice a leak in a line beside the block, i thought it was a powersteering line, could that be one of the issues?

Also SMELL the fluid, it can be still be red but burnt.

 

if the fluid is burnt what does that mean?

 

If it smells burnt you should start looking for a back up trans....check the fluid and fix the leak.
