Most likely the compressor. I've been told i needed mine replaced and that it was a common problem, just never got to doing it..
Or does it just need a recharge?

That is one of just a few things I leave to a shop to do. I have the gauges but don't have a way to evacuate the system or check for leaks so I just leave it alone.

First check to see if your compressor clutch is kicking on. Chance are that its not kicking on. If you have or can barrow a set of gauges, hook them up and check to see what the pressures are. If your low side(Blue) and high side (Red) or at zero then you have a leak. The low side pressure should read somewhere around 48PI and the high side should read around 175PSI. If you have the pressure then you have a compressor/ clutch problem. It could be electrical such as a fuse or mechanical then you would have to replace the compressor. Now if your pressure is at zero the you have a leak. Check all your connections, your condensor, evaporator, reciever dryer, and expansion valve and look for an oily substance. That will give you a general location where the leak is. Also if you have a leak you can always go down to the auto part store and buy some refrigerant and dye for the a/c system. Add them both and let them leak out. It will make it a whole lot easier to find the leak. I hope I was some help.

I think it has to be a leak because I had it charged. The AC worked great but then it started running hot about 5 minutes later. So does everyone think that its just a bad leak?

Its must be a decent size leak. If you turn off your Jeep can you hear a pssssshh noise. Start feeling around you a/c hoses and see if you can feel refrigerant blowing out. Or you can go to the auto part store and buy a UV leak kit. It will show you where your leaking.
