Default Ac compressor noise

I replaced my belt a few months ago, and it squealed after it would sit for a while. I procrastinated tightening it until a couple weeks ago I tightened it down and no more squeaks. Now upon start up I hear a whooshing sound and a little bit if ticking coming from the ac compressor. Once I begin driving it goes away, until I come to an idle I can hear the whooshing sound again. And today I noticed a slight burning smell. Could the belt be to tight? Any help would be appreciated

The belt might have gotten glazed and is actually slipping.

Get some fingernail polish and paint a line on the belt and A/C pulley. Drive it for a while and check to see if they still line up.

You might have to remove the coil wire and get a buddy to bump crank the engine to verify this.

after taking a closer look I noticed where the belt goes on the ac compressor isn't exactly centered. I might just take the belt off and make sure everything is centered. I have a 2001 xj if that helps at all

I took the belt off and back on to make sure everything was lined up correctly. When I was taking it off I noticed the ac pulley had some play in it, to where I could wiggle it around pretty good. Is it supposed ton that? And it only makes the noise upon start up and it goes off after about 10 seconds of idling. Or when I turn in the ac it will make the noise.

Sounds like a bad clutch or bad clutch bearings.

What do you mean that you "relaxed" the compressor?

When you replaced the compressor did you pull a vacuum on the system before (or if you recharged) the system? If not you should take it in and have it drained and vacuumed out or you have a real good chance of seizing up your new compressor.
