Default Ac compressor needs replacing

1999 XJ 4.0 2wd.
My compressor went out late last summer so I wasn't too concerned about replacing it. Might not worry about it at all but my wife drives it some while I use her car to commute to work.
While replacing it I'm going to replace the condenser and heater core.
My question is what is the process of cleaning out the AC lines and charging it? As in can I replace everything, not clean/charge the system and run it a day or so before taking it to a shop to get it cleaned and charged? Or do I pretty much need to tighten the last bolt and tow it straight to the ac shop without even stopping for a sandwich?

There is no problem with doing all the work before hand. But you will want to leave the compressor/clutch wire disconnected. That way you can drive it if need be without hurting it all, then tell the shop servicing it that they need to connect it when you are ready to have it filled.

But it is important to try and get it all apart and back together as quickly as possible. You don't want to leave the system open too long or dust will get in it. You can blow the lines clean with an air compressor and a blow gun and it should be clean enough to reassemble.

The A/C pulley is just a free wheeling "idler pulley" with it's own bearing until you put the juice to the clutch to engage the pump.

Good to go! You just don't want any "accidental discharges" because the wire is hooked up. lol
