Hi everyone, 1999 XJ classic. I have just noticed that my AC compressor seems to have a slow leak that I just caught. It looks like it could just be a gasket failure on the two top parts where the hoses connect. I was also wondering if the whole thing should be flush with the bottom, I tried tightening the nut in the middle between the leaks but it was really tight already.
To change that gasket, the system has to be emptied first (the coolant recovered -which only a shop can do).
Take it to an AC shop and have them quote you a fix first. If cheap, let them do it because they have the gauges and pumps to vacuum it right and then fill it correctly.
If you try to do it, you will have to get the gauges and pump and then figure it all out (there are specific amounts of oil and R134a coolant the system needs and if you don't get that right it is not going to work). But you would still need to have the system R134a recovered by a shop, so while you are there let them do it.
