Default Stroker build parts list, opinions on camshaft and valve springs

Hello Cherokee world, been awhile. My e30 was wrecked in Jan so I drove my jeep for awhile, did some mudding and venturing. I added a heim joint heavy duty track bar, finally no clunking around and made a huge steering response improvement.

I'm selling a 2000 jetta and was going to fund a bigger motor swap on my newly purchased e30, been collecting parts for years todo this and have the whole engine, but it runs fine as is so just going to clean it up and drive for awhile.

DECIDED TO BUILD THE STROKER! Trying to keep the engine budget under $2k. Still need money to get a manual transmission swap to handle the powah.

I have a 1993 complete engine and intake already, no wiring or ecu stuff tho, going to keep Renix.

I will be porting the head and assembling the engine myself, the only machine work will be block decked and bored, head decked and valve job for OS.

This engine is being built for racing, dunes, mud bogs and it needs to tow my boat. Rock crawling is not the goal, I want it to scream upto 5k rpm.

In the future I'd like to super charge, just 6-8 psi and custom ignition so keep that in mind too.

Heres the list so far.

The heart:
258 4 weight short nose crankshaft 3727 NEW with bearings $226

258 Connecting rod set, used $120

CP 677AP +.030 pistons

Jeep Cherokee Wagoneer 4.0/4.0L/242 Sealed Power Pistons Set/6 1987-1995 +.030"
$132.33

The head:
Enginetech Exhaust Valves: 1.530", Intake: 1.940" $83

Trying to figure out some upgraded valve springs. No money for rockers

The rest:

Engine Expansion Plug Kit DNJ FPS1120 fits 87-01 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L-L6
$19.98

Engine Oil Pump-Stock MELLING M167HVS fits 87-01 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L-L6

I can reweld this manifold if I find bad spots which I will

BLACK CERAMIC COATED HEADER FOR 91-99 WRANGLER CHEROKEE 4.0 l6 EXHAUST/MANIFOLD
$103.99

Jeep 4.0/4.0L 242 ARP Performance/RACE Cylinder Head Bolt+Washer Kit/Set 1987-06
$74.84

I'll be using this to make a cowl intake, compare and the bends are about right, cheap too

3" BLACK Cold Air Intake Kit + Filter For 95-00 Avenger/Sebring 2.0L L4/2.5L V6
$43.99

I could probably skip this, but I figure its added insurance to keep the built engine balanced.

80100 Jeep 4.0L 6-Cylinder 7.2 inch Powerforce Harmonic Balancer Damper
$82.00

Jeep 4.0 Push Rods Complete Set of 12 242ci 1987 - 2006 Wrangler Cherokee

Alot of other things are pretty new on my jeep like cap and rotor and spark wires. What about a "performance coil"?

Heres where I am left:
Camshaft, Lifters, Timing Set, Pushrods, Valve Springs, Retainers locks

I was thinking the COMP SK68-239-4 which is a 262 intake 270 ex duration
$230 at summit, Has double link style timing set. Then I need pushrods and a valve spring set.

I cant seem to find a whole valve spring set only single pieces... I've found for upto 1987 but not for the 4.0l

*note*
Part No.P5249464 is for the springs, part no. P4452032 Mopar 2.2,8 DEGREES keepers, part no. P4529218 for the retainers. MOPAR expensive... ends up being over $300

Heres my other option, from Clegg engine, 269 intake 273 ex
$485 shipped... Everything I need, looks like single link style timing set... JUST got a msg back from seller and the cam is howards, valve springs are too and duel so the head will need machined... Getting to expensive here.. Typically how much to machine the head for dual springs?

Or I could piece together all my own

If I didnt need valve springs that would save me a lot of money, but I am thinking I need them.

Ideas, Opinions?

Without valve springs or machine work I'm at around $1400, thats with the comp cam, lifter and timing set.

I guess if I went with the COMP SK68-231-4, with 250 intake 258ex duration the stock springs would hold up for awhile... I see a lot of people running that cam on stocks springs and good til about 4500rpm

I really wanted the bigger cam though for the future

Are you trying to say if I go say LS ZO6 springs and a big cam I am going to break the rockers? I wouldn't argue...

Just did the math and if I went with the comp cam kit at $230, plus $28 for pushrods

Then did....

GM Performance Valve Spring 12499224 $70

97-05 Chevy 346 5.7L LS1 LS6 INTAKE & EXHAUST VALVES $87
INTAKE:
.3136" Stem. 2.000" Head.
Chrome Stem
EXHAUST: .3127" Stem. 1.551" Head.
23-8N Stainless. Chrome Stem

Comp Cams 623-16 Valve Locks; Valve Spring Retainer Lock $36

COMP CAMS 774-16 STEEL VALVE SPRING RETAINER $48

That would be $241 plus machine work

Coming in at a total of$499

Hmm I will have to decide to go all out and spend the extra $$$ or just get the milder cam, port the head and lap the stock valves myself and just have the head decked.

Ive decided to go with the sk68-231-4 cam $230, new pushrods $28, stock springs and valves on a ported head and 3 angle valve job. So it will be about $200 for the machine work on head.

I figure later on I can pull the head and upgrade to ls setup, right now if I try to do that I know I will go over my $2k budget.

Head clean surface and valve job, port myself $200
rockauto parts: $168
ebay order: $722
summit camshaft lifters and timing set $230
crank $226
-------------------
Thats $1546

Left with machine block hone deck and balance rotating assembly, should keep me under $2000 for the engine build.

Don't need the ARP head bolts, new stock replacement like Victor Reinz are fine.

Don't need the different harmonic dampner, the stock is fine.

Use a Victor Reinz MLS head gasket.

Probably could have reused the stock pushrods.

Will not rev to 5000rpm. Head, cam, intake manifold and TB barely flow enough for a 4.0. Definitely it will not flow enough for a 4.6L stroker to 5000rpm. Expect good torque but for the most part fall flat after 4000-4200rpm.

The automatic will easily handle the power. No reason to go manual at all.

Are you aware that the AW4 was used in the toyota Celica Supra Turbo?

As for cams, contact Chad at Golen engines. He'll guide you and sell you what you need at a very fair price.

Well that was the point of the ported head, big ls valves, big cam, ported intake manifold and 62mm TB, 3" intake piping. headers and free flow custom exhuast

The arp bolts are not much more than stockers plus I dont have the bolts for the HO and want to have motor built and drop it in. Plus if I boost it thats good insurance.

The harmonic balancer I have has 200k, for $20 more I get the upgraded one, why not?

pushrods got rusty, again for $28 id rather get new internal engine stuff.

I always use reinz mls

I have decided to keep the AW4, just do a solenoid service and transgo shift kit. The reason to go manual is cuz manual.... I hate autos

So for now I have decided to go with the milder 232 cam, port the head myself, have it decked, lap valves myself (I checked them today with soapy water and they dont leak as is) and keep stock lowest mile springs.

That way I know I wont run out of money and if anything have extra for maybe... A bumper or something cool that can be seen not hidden inside an engine.

The engine build and rest of parts will stay the same.

Now when I do want to upgrade the head and cam I will get this, they said they can put stronger valve springs in at no extra charge. So a ready to go strengthened and LS valvetrain built head for $595 shipped no core. Not bad

Change, been trying to find a down pipe from the header, I can fab cat back no prob, already did.

Found this, much better looking welds than the cheap no name junk, set up to cat in stock placement. good price, done. PaceSetter 70-1191
