Default ABS how to tell if I have it on a 1999

Hi Guys, great info on this site...

I am new to Jeep's, just bought a 1999 Cherokee....

How do I know if it has ABS? This is my Daughter's Jeep, she saw on the dash that the light is there, but I think that they put all the lights on the dash, only some are dummy lights....

Open the hood, near the master cylinder and booster, there should be the ABS pump with a bunch of lines going in and out.

Go out on a loose gravel road, hit about 10-20mph and stomp on the brakes and hold it until you come to a full stop. If you felt your pedal pulse, you have abs... Of course, be careful, and I dont really recommend it, but its the easiest way to tell if you cant find anything under the hood...

you should be able to see the tone rings on the front axles right where the brakes are. or at least see the sensor.

another way is most if not all 97+ xj's with abs had the dana 35 rear axle. all others without abs should have came with the chry.8.25. chances are, anyways.

Yes, that is option #2, wait until the snow flies here in CO and then test it.... I was hoping to find out a little sooner, so I can instruct my Daughter on how to stop in the snow with her new Jeep... Thanks for the info....

Why not just request the build sheet from Chrysler?

I have a 99 classic and it doesnt have abs. I know this doesnt help you much, but hopefully yours will because it is your daughters ride and sometimes women dont compensate for not having mechanical assistance.

My girlfriend has a 96 Sport. It has a 8.25 in the rear and NO ABS. Its kinda scary when you have to panic brake (Like if some dumbass pulls out in front of you going 55), the rear locks up pretty quick and it gets squirrely... Then you have to deal with flatspots on your tires for a couple hundred miles... Ask me how we know this.
