Have a 98 xj with 274,000 on it. With in the last month it started making a ticking sound first thing in the morning on first start and over 3,000 rpm for the first 1/2 and hour to hour of running then nothing. I just changer the oil and am using a H.M 10-30 oil and a stock filter.from what iv read people with the same problem say to use rotulla (not sure the spelling) t5 10-30 and a ph8a or equivalent filter and that's helped. Anyone got any ideas that might help me out?

Never use a Fram filter on your Jeep.

Wix or Napa Gold. Rotella T6 is great stuff. T3 works well also.

When it ticks upon start-up, what if you immediately shut it off, wait 10 seconds and re-start? Tick gone?

No it ticks for about 1/2 an hour or so and then stops. I mean the ticks not bad but it drives me crazy cuz I know it's there. Other people don't notice it but I do. Is running a bigger filter a good idea? I mean from what iv read it gives you like an external 1/2 qt of oil. I just don't want to be driving to work one day the the engine blow up or something. I'm looking for a engine with lower miles on but I need this you to last me till I can get a new one and put it in.. Iv tarted finding the tick with a stethoscope and can't seem to find it anywhere. I don't here any ticking coming from the valve train head or motor. I'm just really stuck. I love me jeep and want to keep it around as long as I can.

Cracked exhaust manifold that heats up and seals after things warm up?

Hey cruiser I have a question about the ticking. Because mine stopped and hasn't ticked for about a month now. Sorry to intrude on this post but may help others if you answer this?

Exhaust really? I'll have to check that out later and see what I can find.

Well I checked the exhaust and found no leaks or cracks anywhere. I did find a little pump that is what look to be part of the evap system that is ticking like hell. When I unplug the clip attached to it it stops. But I'm figuring that if I leave it unplugged it will throw a check engine light. The other thing I found is that the engine sounds like a tractor running. Is this normal?

Nah. They don't sound like tractors to me. Unplug the evap solenoid and see what happens.

Have you done anything like changed oil and filter?

Might have had a sticky lifter that has freed up.

Well I just changed my oil today actually. Mopar filter and rotella t6 but I just wanted to know if injector cleaner did anything to halt that? I put some in about a month ago and I haven't heard ticking since.

Entirely possible.

Keep in mind that the Renix injectors were prone to leaking at a seam/crimp. If you get a chance, replace them with later style injectors.

I went to auto zone and look at the t6 10-30 oil but it said for heavy duty Diesel engines. It ok to run that in a nondiesel engine?

Sounds like a good idea. I'm just surprised my tickings gone for now atleast. Been ticking for like a year and a half, which I know isn't long but gets annoying from time to time. Kinda bummed( not that mopar is bad or anything i like mopar) but I went to my napa and got a napa gold filter and they gave me a wrong filter:/ had to return it and they didn't have my filter in stock anymore.
