First thing you have to do is remove all the plastic interior trim around the roof line. Unfortunately the way it is designed and all goes together, that also requires removing additonal interior pieces to access retaining screws for the upper pieces. Then there are several metal clips that hold the headliner board up that have to be removed. Thet are easy to pull out and then the whole headliner board can be slid out of the back hatch.
Sorry this pic is not very descriptive but it the best one I have.

Just to add to winstons post, the lights have to come out to,be carfeul with the front one those little plastic ***** that hold it in are fragile. Little advise, try and fin another headliner,I tried to fix mine, even removed all the material down to the cardboard to insure the cloth had a good place to adhere to,and it still came loose, not to say it cannot be done, but I just bought a 98 headliner and put it in my 89,speakers and all for $20.Looks great.

I just done this on my 2000 And it really is easy! Start at the rear and remove the trim, Grab handles, Light console, Seat belt mounts etc. Then start at nthe rear and work it loose as you go forward. Have a helper hold up at the rear so it cant buckle.
Once its out use a wire brush and remove ALL of the foam.I found some grey felt material to recover it with and it turned out great. Use the 3M Spray adhesive and dont be stengy with it ! I used 2 cans on mine and I mean I Soaked It Down !...LOL
Start by laying the material out and trimming it so it has a good 6" extra all the way around.
Then fold it back half way, Glue down the first 2 foot or so first. Then Roll the remainder back on top of the part you just done. Now Spray and roll a foot or two at a time working all the wrinkles out. After its all covered go back and cut out the holes for the light, speakers grab bars etc.
It is really easy and you can choose what meterial to use. I liked the felt because I will never again have to F with that dam foam !!....LOL

I replace mine, with org. colored foam backed. Off the internet. (cost about $50, material & spray adhesive) It was easy to do. Take about an afternoon. Had enough to do the overhead console also, To match. Looks good, like the factory job. Like everyone says. Pull off all trim, Back to front. All overhead lights, and console. Carefully slide panel out back (after releasing the four clips, I just bent them down. And bent them back up for re-install) Put back in reverse order.
