Default 98 Cherokee No Codes Low Fuel Pressure

So my son got a 98 Jeep Cherokee SE inline 6. Has trouble starting and seems power starved at times. No codes when hooked up to the computer.

Checked pressure at the fuel rail and it reads about 20 psi when the key is turned on. When the car is running it is at 25 PSI maybe goes up 1 or 2 when accelerated.

Is this definitely the fuel pump or is there something else I can check before dropping the tank?

Check the fuel filter. Make sure the pump relay is working correctly and not flaking out. However, with your pressure at half the proper level, I'm guessing there's no way around having to drop the tank and replace the pump.

Thanks for the reply. I think on the 98 it only has the strainer on the pump.

Is there any consensus on which fuel pump to buy? There are like 7 on RockAuto.

It's the fuel pump. My favorite has always been Bosh with #2 being Carter. But my understanding is that Bosch is hard to source.

Rock auto has both but the Bosh comes with the strainer but without the tank seals, the Carter is a little less expensive and comes with the tank seals but not the strainer.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Just want to update. I bought the pump and pulled the tank. On the 98 you can't just replace the pump, you have to do the whole assembly so that kind of sucked.

While we had the tank our we went ahead and replaced the differential seal since it was leaking.

Got it all put back together and it started right up. I thought I would have to bleed it at that pressure valve thing at the fuel rail but gas shot out. Very different from before.

Thanks for all the help!
