I have a 98 Cherokee Classic with the following symptom:
1. Will not start without holding the key and pressing the shifter forward and depressing the button on the side of the T handle.
2. What is working: The reverse lights work, the battery is strong, starter good, positive & negative cables are good.

I have been reading the posts about the NSS, am planning to remove it and perform a repair initially. I will replace it if the repair is unsuccessful.

The shifter seems to be a bit sloppy, but not to much. I checked what I could see of the linkage underneath, nothing appeared out of place.

I would appreciate ideas, comments, or hey dude...your on the right track.

DOES THE ENgINe TURN OVER WHEN YOU TURN THE key

 

Having to wiggle the shift lever while turning the key or having to start in neutral is almost always the neutral safety switch. You are on the right track.

As you mentioned, try "refurbishing" it. Here is a link to one of the best procedures I've found on this.

Final adjustment is important here.
