IAC is probably bad try cleaning it see if that helps it controls your idle speed

Mine is an 89,I am not sure about the 96,but if you do not put the tps back in the right place it will effect the idle,I had to move mine around until it was right. It will also effect how the trany shifts in automatics if not in the right place.

When you replaced the tps did you diconnect the battery to relearn the computer. Take the terminal off the battery and leave it off for a minute or so. Then reconnect it. Any sensor that you replace you should do this because the new sensor that is replacing the old wone will have a slightly different value to it..

Also i would clean the throttle body and the IAC. Make sure that when your cleaning the throttle body that you either use a Sensor safe cleaner or remove the IAC sensor from it so that you dont damage them. Some cleaners are so harsh they will damage the windings in the IAC and the guide bushing around the pintle making it useless for its job of fine tuning the air flow through the TB....

'97 and newer require the dealer IAC. Found that out after replacing 3 with aftermarket ones on my brothers '99 XJ. The tolerance is different on the factory one than the over the counter.

Some people get luck others not so lucky..
