Default 97 xj no spark problems

Hey guys I'm new to the fourms and I have a 97 xj 4.0 and at first when I got it it had no spark so I replaced the crank position sensor and that was the problem. So I drove it about 20 miles it started making noises coming from the alternator. Drove about 2 more miles it shut off and the alternator was seized. Not sure if that's why it died or not but I pulled the belt off and it still wasn't starting. So I found out it wasn't getting spark its getting fuel though. So I went ahead and replaced the cps again tht wasn't the problem. Replaced te coil that wasn't the problem either and that's all I've done so far. So I'm not sure what's wrong. Does anyone know anything that could be the problem? Another sensor or something?

Agreed! Heck, mine doesn't even throw a cel half the time, but put it on a good diagnostics computer (along with a mechanic who knows what he's doing...) and it can tell ya a lot! Good luck.

Check engine light is on but I think that is because of the o2 sensor the previous guy cut it lol. And I'm 17 so I don't have the money to pay a mechanic. I could fix it my self if i knew what's wrong with it lol

I don't think that would help with it not getting spark?

thats to clear any codes that are present then cranking it will produce new ones to read has nothing to do with helping get spark back.

Is it the post cat sensor? Must be cause I think w/o per cat sensor it will run like total hell. Question is can you simply solder the wires back together? I'd assume so, allowing the wires are intact..? Like I said though, you can usually get a mechanic to put it on their computer for free. My guys "charge 20 bucks" but damned if they've ever charged anyone.. Hopefully you'll have similar luck.

So the issue is its not starting? Ok.. That makes it difficult to get to a shop.. Sorry I missed that! A voltmeter can tell you a lot instead! Maybe not as fancy, but there is good info on here and a voltmeter is about as cheap as you can go for helping fix this. Does your school have any kinda automotive program?

Has the alternator been replaced?

If not, replace the alternator and drive belt.

Go to the Power Distribution Center (PDC) in the engine bay (black box next to the right fender) and remove the cover. Look at the inside of the cover. It will identify the relays. Swap the ASD relay with the Radiator Electric Fan relay and see if it fires up. If it does, the original relay is bad.

The ASD (Automatic Shut Down) relay controls the ignition, oxygen sensors heaters, and the fuel injectors. The fuel pump is on a seperate circuit from the ASD.

While you're in the PDC, check the ASD fuse (shown in pic) and, while you're at it, check the O2S heaters fuse (shown also).
