On my XJ with the factory alarm system, the front passenger door being opened often activates the alarm. It doesn't matter it I unlock door with the key fob or use the key in the door. Sometimes when I fob lock it I get an extra chirp or two. Any thoughts on what could be wrong? I assume there is some sort of sensor in each door, could this possibly cause the malfunction?

 

try a brand new battery in your key fob as an easy 1st step. A weak battery in the fob can cause weird behavior

The 97 has a unique mobiliser, so you will have to read the 97 FSM for detail

You are lucky you do not have an "export model" 97 (as was sent to Australia), as a failed immobilser can only be fixed with the following matching components for another local 97

PCM, SKIM module, ignition lock and keys, complete door lock set and keys. Immobiliser failure in an Oz 97 is a death sentence

Faulty wiring in either front door harness can also cause such an issue
