97 Cherokee High Idle - Very High
Hello. I've browsed this forum many times for advice as an older Cherokee owner for roughly 6 years now. I have a problem I can't find an answer for.
There are lots of high idle threads and I've pretty much browsed through every one with no known answer.
So here's the story. My water pump bearing seized up the other day and the belt came off while driving. I lost power steering which immediately made me aware of the issue, and then very quickly the temp light came on. I pulled over and let it cool and put the belt back on (not knowing at this time why it came off). Started it and it slid right off again. Replaced the water pump and thermostat, flushed the system, etc.
Now to the problem - fired it up and it idles at what I can only guess (dummy gages) is in the 2000-2500rpm range, maybe higher. It's fires right up no issues. It idles completely even no bumps or bruises just a nice even high idle. I can't find a vacuum leak, and from what I read and have heard from others vaccuum leaks would cause high but sort of rough idle. This is smooth. Since I already had backup IAC, MAP, and TP sensors I replaced all of those.
I do not have the radiator fan reconnected as I was waiting to see if I'd need to adjust the belt tension and address any potential leaks from the cooling system. Could having the fan disconnected cause this issue? I wouldn't think so but who knows.
Edit: oh and I also reset the computer via the ground positive cable, turn key, cycle lights, turn off method.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.

Tried adjusting the TV cable?
No, it shouldnt matter- fan connected or not
Does the idle come down once it warms up?

It's the same idle warm or cold.
It ran fine, then once the belt slipped off and I'm assuming it overheated since the light came on, now I have this issue. I haven't driven it other than forward or reverse in the driveway but putting it in drive makes no difference. It wants to take off I have to hold the brake down pretty good.

Yes everything is hooked up properly as far as I can tell except the electric cooling fan that kicks on when it gets hotter. I'd like to leave it out while the coolant circulates so I can make sure nothing is leaking but I haven't even let it run long enough for the thermostat to open because the high RPMs kinda worry me to let it cycle like that.

Would it be possible that when my belt slipped off it hit the line to the vacuum reservoir? Would a downstream leak cause the same issues? Is there even access to it for this to occur? I was looking at a schematic of the vacuum system and had no idea a line ran down into the front bumper so now I'm curious.

Did it get hot enough to loosen the manifolds? Spray some brake clean/starting fluid at the back of the manifolds and see if there is any change.
