Default 97 4.l engine compatability with 93 cherokee

Hey guys, like many of you I've just come in the house after a long day of grease and frustration in search of answers.....I have a 93 jeep cherokee 4.0 L 4wd country model. The head cracked after overheating so I bought a used 97 4.0 L engine to replace it. I got the old one out today and have the new one hovering above the engine bay. I noticed that the fuel lines look a little different and I'm not so sure about the compatability of the 97 to the 93 now. I know it seems a little late to be asking about it, but do any of you know if this will work & if so, what do I need to do to ensure a smooth transition? Is there anything special I should know in advance before I get too far? Can this work? All feedback is appreciated and I thank you in advance for any comments that could even remotely help my seemingly insurmountable task ahead of me.

Please use the search function of this forum. This exact question of engine swap years has been discussed quite a few times in the past 4 weeks.
All newer LONG blocks will work on the year they were made to all the older years. Notice I put LONG blocks in capitals. That does not include such things as intake or exhaust manifolds as well as flywheels etc. Sometimes you get lucky and some times you have to swap out the newer parts to the older so you don't mess up your ECM.

itll work fine... you may have to pull off the fuel rail from your old motor but itll work... i got a 96 HO in my 89 Renix... thats alot harder to do... youll be fine.. if something doesnt line up then just swap it off your old motor...

Jaime57,
Believe it or not I spent a good hour plus searching the forums with "engine swap" "engine compatability" and "97 in 93".... I didn't come up with anything useful. I certainly don't profess to be a search expert.. please let me know a better way of choosing my key words etc.
Is "ECM" Electronic Control Module? Is that the same as the vehichles "computer"

Huntingman,
Those words of encouragement (no matter the outcome) made me feel a lot better. I hadn't thought about swapping the fuel rail (duh!...er hope it fits). I guess the only other things I'm nervous about is whether the computer stuff will accept the new motor? & The torque converter came off the spindle thing that sticks out the front of the transmission. Does it need to be lined back up any special way or just so it will bolt to the pattern on the drive plate?

The torque converter must be put back on tne shaft all the way back as far as you can. Turn it till it clicks into place. If you try to install the engine with it not completly seated you will damage the converter AND the transmission pump.

Sometimes the answer is right in front of you but not in the way you asked.
yes to the ecm

I'm glad you told me about the torque converter needing to be all the way back!... any ideas about the "ECM" or computer?

im using the Renix ecm and HO motor and throttle body... works fine... so your computer will be fine... if a plug doesnt fit right then get the old part... i think it will all be the same exceptfor the throttle body... you may needto swap the older throttle body on because the sensor plugs may be different... but your ECM will read fine... same motor boss...

Sorry, I got concerned that new posts were coming in so quickly mine would be lost on a 3rd or fourth page where no one would look & I only have today left out of the holiday weekend to work on it. Thanks again for your help & enjoy the rest of your weekend!

its no big deal but just bothers alot of folks... when we post to you back the thread jumps back to the top again also... then someone else may chime in and it just keeps getting hit that way... so you dont really have to worry about it... only time u should have to bump a tread to the top is if you ask something and dont get a answer for like a day...
