Default 97 4.0 won't idle?

My buddys 97 xj will start just fine and run beautiful off idle but as soon as it returns to an idle it idles rough for a few minutes and then stalls. I've replace maf, tps, iac, cleaned the throttle body, new air filter, and adjusted the idle up. None of these things have helped at all. It didn't start doing this till we replaced his power steering pump. Any help would be great. Like I said, it runs great at all rpms, it just won't idle

Have you checked for a vacuum leak?

I looked but didn't see any. I may have overlooked some since I'm not positive on where they all are.

How did you adjust the idle?

Idle is not adjustable on the 4.0............so yes, that is a good question.

A common cause of stalling on this engine is a marginal battery. And yes, you can have a battery strong enough to start the engine, but marginal enough to give the engine management system fits and create stalling. Have the battery LOAD TESTED. Any parts store will do this for you for free; it is the only accurate way of determining battery condition.

There is a small screw under the throttle linkage that when adjusted up keeps the linkage up higher therefore making it idle higher. And thanks for the battery idea I never thought about that

Messing with that screw is going to screw up your idle though when you find the true root cause of your idle issue.

I would advise not making adjustments on that linkage screw.

I understand what you mean. It's not a permanent solution. It's just to make it driveable till we figure out the problem

I have no idea. I couldn't figure out the problem to myself so I dropped it off with a mechanic friend of mine and he fixed it for me.
