96 xj Headliner fix?
Hey I gotta 96 xj and my headliner coming of and hanging bad. I've ripped it several times with my fishing rods. I've tried several types of adhesive spray and it's only helped for about a week.. I'm wondering if there's any tips to fixing it.

You have to take the whole thing down. Take all the fabric off, and then sand off all the fiberglass that is flaking off. The reason it fails after a week is because the backing is deteriorating, so you need to get that all off and get to the good underlayment. Then you can spray on your adhesive, and put on new fabric.

X2 on getting the fiber crap off. I did mine and it only took an afternoon. I redid it in black suade and got headliner adhesive from advanced auto I believe, might have been auto zone, but both care similar stuff. Turned out really well.

You only have to remove the old foam, I used a small broom.
I used this link and mine came out great! I also ordered the fabric from them and the color match was perfect.

I had to replace my headliner as well, the only problem was that the foam backing material wasn't really deteriorating that much, the previous owner's dog had chewed a hole in it. So I ended up having to take a wire brush to the fiberglass board and having to scrape it for an hour or two to get all the old foam stuff off. I used the same link as listed above and despite it being a lot of work it was totally worth it.

It wasn't difficult just, tedious. I had the best luck with Sprayway #87 contact cement. One thing the instructions didn't include that I wish I would have done is leave about 2 or 3 inches in the front to fold over and glue to the top. It will give you a really nice front edge. It will also be stronger bc, that is the only edge without trim to hold it.
Good luck to you.
