Default 96 xj engine tick

I have 96 xj with the 4.0L strait 6 it was broke down for awhile and i ended up replacing the nns, starter, distributor, rotor, plugs, wires, and cps to get it running, once i finally got the timing right it runs great except for a tick coming from the top end my thoughts are that its the rocker arms making the noise because it goes away after about 2500 rpm im wondering if i need i need to adjust my values or replace the rocker arms any help would be appreciated thank you

The 4.0L is well known for the noisy lifters. They're not really adjustable. The rocker arms, pivots and bridge assembly is torqued to specs and that's it. I've read of some using oil treatments or thicker oil to quiet them down. Since it quiets down at higher rpm, I wouldn't think it was anything like a sticky lifter that might need looked in to.

What brand of oil filter are you currently using?

If you have a fram or k&n filter, put a good filter on it. Those are junk and can clog a well as not having anti drain back valves

i have a tick as well, its from the cam syncro/ or oil pump shaft, or what ever you wanna call it. its the part the cps mounts on top of. the busing inside the housing is bad and causes the rotating assembly to tap against the cam sensor pick up and cause a ticking. stupid design easy fix. at first i thought i had top end issues at first, i touched the cps and actually feel it making contact.

Get that fram out of there ASAP. I use a quart of MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil) with every change. I also use a thicker oil, 10w40 it helps with my lifter noise.

CKP is the crank position sensor, (on the bellhousing), commonly called the CPS
CMP is the cam position sensor. It's actual name is a closely guarded secret, so we just need to call it a cam sensor. Just my .02

Unless things have changed the K&N is just a Mobil 1 with a nut welded on it. Should be an acceptable filter to use.
