96 engine work for a 01?
Getting a 01 Cherokee sport 6 cylinder 4.0 but the block is cracked. Will a block from a 1996 Cherokee straight 6 engine work to replace the cracked 01 block?

You can use the 1996 head, however you will need an adapter to make the exhaust ports match up. https://jeepexhaustadapter.com/
Aside from that, you can get a head from a 2002+ 4.0L (WJ or TJ) that doesn't crack, or buy an aftermarket one.
But, if you've got a solid donor, the adapter makes a lot more sense.

This might help with some of the stuff you will need to do. I thought it was an excellent write up.
