Hey guys new to the forum and these vehicles in general.
The latch on my driver's side door wouldn't open so it wasn't possible to close the door. I tried pushing it open with a screwdriver while holding in the handle but it wouldn't budge. So I opened the panel and pulled the the latch assembly and it seems totally shot. A piece of black plastic fell out from behind the latch and it seems like the locks can't get the handle levers under the release levers anymore, if that makes sense.
I have looked around for this part online for a while but I can't find it in stock anywhere, the part number is 55000767. If anyone could point me in the right direction or offer other advice I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

You would probably get more accurate responses with year, model and description (i.e. 2dr/4dr) But most of our vehicles parts are out of production. Sometimes some aftermarket companies pick up production but we have to be scavengers to keep these old vehicles going by salvaging parts from wrecker/parts yards. You might want to download a factory service manual to see how some parts interact and find the one you need at a U pull it yard or the like. Good luck, and you can never provide too much information about your vehicle/situation.

In the future I'll provide as much info as I can in posts, I don't know the etiquette/conventions for this forum yet so thanks for the advice. Where do you normally find digital versions of fsm's?

Sent you a PM, if you have a 96, you will have some parts that are carry overs from 95 and some that were used on the 97's. 1996 was kind of a unique year for Xj's. So the manuals you are looking for are the 95 and 97 as well. Maybe one of the other members know where to download a 96 service manual at??

Thanks for the reply Sig, I ended up pulling one from a 92 at a local junkyard, and for a bargain too compared to listed out of stock prices.

You can also add it in you ''signature" so it shows at the bottom of your post. Keep in mind with that second option it doesn't show for those (like me) who use their phone rather than a computer for this forum.
Regarding the FSMs: have a look on Cruiser54.com.
Scroll down past the green links and toward the end on the left you'll find the Technical manuals link.
