Default 96 Cherokee dies after start

New to the forum here. I have a 96 Sport with 4.0 straight 6. It will start up but dies immediately. If I rev the engine, I can keep it running, but as soon as I let off the gas, it dies. Changed the throttle position sensor, but it did not help. Any suggestions?

A common cause of stalling is a marginal battery. And yes, you can have a battery that is strong enough to start the engine, but marginal enough to give the engine management system fits and create stalling.

LOAD TEST your battery. It is the only conclusive way of determining battery condition. Most parts stores will do this for you for free.

There are other possibilities, but the battery must be ruled in or out early in the troubleshooting process.

Good luck and check back and let us know what you find!

Check your vaccuum hoses. Mice crawl in there and like to chew them up.

Thanks, but I can't keep it going long enough to get in gear and drive anywhere. I charged the battery and checked the water level. It appears to be fine. I also checked the relief valve on the fuel injector rail, and there is no pressured fuel coming out. Because of that, I was thinking a fuel pressure regulator. In this model it is in the tank with the fuel pump though.

Charging and checking water level is NOT conclusive in any way.....

LOAD TEST your battery. It is free. Do it. Yes, it could be something else but a stalling engine is very commonly linked to a marginal battery.

Turned out to be the fuel pressure regulator. I had no pressure at the fuel injector rail. Dropped the tank, since the regulator was in there with the pump. Went ahead and replaced the fuel pump and filter while in there. Runs fine now.
