I searched but couldn't find an answer to my question so here goes.
I have a 96 Cher, 4.0L that has a valve knocking bad. It started after an oil change. So I took the cover off last night and found the valve (it's 4th from the back). I can put a hammer handle down on it and make it stop rattling. I replaced the rocker and push rod to no avail. It's the valve itself. I can slip a washer under when the rocker contacts the top of the valve stem and that makes the noise stop but also makes the engine run like crap.
Any ideas short of getting a valve job which I cannot afford right now?
Thanks and God Bless

there's a chance of a collapsed lifter. take a look at the other valves and make sure they are all the same heigth. if it runs ok with out the washer under the rocker but "knocks" may just be a lifter.

Thanks bro!!
If it's a collapsed lifter is that something that can be fixed without removing the head? I'm an engineer with tools; not a mechanic.
If it runs fine but knocks will it hurt it to drive it to the shop etc.?
Thanks again

if it is in fact a collapsed lifter, they are pretty easy to replace providing the oil has been changed regularly. if not there will be sludge built up on it and it will be harder to get it out. you'll have to use a long pair of needle nose pliers or there is a tool to remove the lifters.
