im in the middle of restoring headliner got that done and speaker console but im stuck on these visors, is there anyway to open these up so i can put new material on them, i see no screws at all i do see a seam around the bottom area. how or what pry it open from there will it unclick or break ?
i got the visors with the lights in them.
I just gently pried mine open on that seam. Work your way around slowly, it was glued but do able. Seems to me there are snaps or clips inside ? it was along time ago.
as you see the material on the visor is pretty messed up and rest of the headliner looked just like it, i dont have before picture but you can imagine. the headliner turned out quite nice and i used Loctice Spray Adhesive 3 cans all together 2 at least for the headliner itself and another for the speaker console.
the speaker console is a bit harder to do cause of all the turns and curves you will end up with a few rinkles depends on how stretchy the materical is.
If you cut the old one off using a razor blade, roughly 0.75" to 1" in from the edges, you will start to see plastic tabs all around the visor. You use a screwdriver to pop the tabs. It's hard to explain but the youtube videos do a good job of communicating it. I figured it out just by looking at them.
The hardest tabs are close to the hinge. I was afraid of breaking it there so I just struggled with it for a while and figured out how to pop it apart without breaking anything. Hard to explain but again, search youtube vids and it'll help a lot.
Once the tabs are popped the entire thing opens up. You can remove the old material, clean the surface and start upholstering the new one. Close it back up like a sammich and you are done. My build thread shows roughly how I did it.
ok, i figured its going to be some puzzling but doable i seen extra holes in the roof area between the two visor holders right above the rear view mirror and looks like i can use those for any kind of small bracket that can hold up the front end of the bigger overhead console, i do have one like that in the 98 zj, soon i will nose around at the junkyard see what i can find.
