im going to replace my u joints in the front axle and while im in there i want to replace the axle seals too but its a bit hard to figure out if i have the right seals o'reallys cant help me . now i have ordered two seals from rock auto but it doesnt look like i have the right ones but cant tell for sure.
in the picture the seals i have right here, can someone tell me please if these are the right ones before i start on this job if not please provide me with an accurate part number.
It looks like you are pointing to the outer dust shields, by the Cs of the axle housing. They don't really seal anything, but keep large amounts of dirt and water from getting in the tubes, but they still let stuff in.
And the Spicer parts looks like the inner oil seal, that is inside the differential. To change those you have to open the cover, drain the gear oil, remove the carrier, punch out the old seals, and then carefully press in the new ones.
Actually the outer dust seals just keep rocks out so they don't bind the axle. All they are are plastic discs that spin with the axle shaft. Water, sand and dirt/mud still finds it's way in.

It's strange, you're talking about the ones right at the edge of the axle tube, right?
Even my 00 TJ didn't look like that, they looked like the ones on my 95... white plastic. Technically called "oil slingers", and available from Quadratec for a few bucks pretty easily.
Was the late 90's XJ using something wholly different? (Could be my phone being bad with images, lol)
I just did mine on my 92 xj this past month. What you have are the inner axle seals. They are actually not too difficult to replace, but yes, you have to remove the diff. cover, and pull the gear assembly out. Knocking out the old ones using a long wooden dowel and a socket, or something like that, then putting the new ones in the same way. There are a couple of Utube vids that are extremely helpful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbbbJ****Kg This one gives you the rundown with really clear camera work.
Another one mentioned getting the carrier out if it's stuck. Loosen the clamp bolts, then wad up a towel and work it under the carrier gears. Then reach behind and rotate the driveline to turn the gears and pull the towel in under and behind the carrier. It pops right loose.
