93 Suddenly having starting/running problem
Ok, the Jeep's been running sound. Yesterday, as I headed to a store, it suddenly started "chugging" and I heard a "popping" sound.
Then it was over, or so I thought.
I parked, ran in, came out, and the jeep wouldn't start. It turned over fine.
I ended up using some starting fluid, it caught. I revved it a few times, seemed ok...headed home.
It chugged again.
Parked, and today I haven't been able to drive it at all. It WILL start, then if you press the accellerator it starts dying. Let off, it rev's up, then starts to slowly de-rev, tap repeatedly on the accelerator, sometimes it starts idling up, others it just dies. When it does start to idle up, it only lasts for a bit.
Checked vacuums as I could, seem fine.
Plugs, wires, rotor, and dist cap are only a few months olde...
HELP!!

*check for codes
*verify fuel pressure with a GAUGE. Compare your readings to factory spec. A popping or backfire in the intake is often related to a "lean" fuel/air mixture. If you don't have a gauge or access to one, they can be rented for a few bucks from many big box parts stores. Call around.
*test your "throttle position sensor"

Sounds like fuel problem... know when the fuel filter was last replaced? I like to do my fuel filter every-other oil change since they're cheap & easy and it'll save the pump from overworking against a clog. Fuel pump going bad or bad fuse/connection maybe? Bad batch of fuel could lead to some of the symptoms described too maybe?
I would definitely start with checking fuel pressure. Sounds like not enough gas in the mixture since when you open the throttle and it gets more air it dies out. If you can verify good pressure that would rule-out a lot.
And like FREEGDR said check for codes - that never hurts and can save time finding bad sensors, computers, etc.

I really appreciate the input people!
Due to a lack of specialized tools, I check things out the best way I can with what I do have...
I pulled the fuel line connection at the rail and when i turned it over there was gas flowing. Naturally, since I couldn't keep it open it does not verify anything, other than it will "get" gas...
I can work the throttle and rev it....sometimes
It will only rev up a few times before it starts chugging and dying...
Will change out the fuel filter today and see about those renting those tools..unfortunately, I'm unemployed now so that may not be an option.
Will touch base again with results.
THANKS for all the input so far people!!

ok, i replaced the tps, I replaced the fpr, I replaced the fuel filter.
Continues to do the exact same thing...
IF it starts, it will only run for no more than 1 to 1.5 min.
I have been able to get it to rev up to 5k only..and have to almost time my stepping on the accellerator with the rev/derev of the jeep..
I HAVE to tap on the accellerator lightning quick to keep it from dying.
When the accellerator is pressure off, the jeep will increase rpm.
Depress the accellerator it decreases rpm.
So, I'm stumped, once again....
I very much appreciate all input from everyone....and sure hope we hit the mark soon!!

You really MUST test fuel pressure. It is one of the FIRST thing that a technician would do with these symptoms.
Must be done with a gauge. They can be rented from many big box parts stores for a few bucks.
I highly recommend doing this. Compare your numbers to factory spec and post em here.

Yup, have to get the gauge, like tj said, theres a shcraeder valve on the fuel rail, thread it on, crank it and see where your at, compare against what the manual says!

Stay away from Airtex pumps. I like Bosch if they are available.

try bypassing the white ceramic resistor that is on the drivers side fender, it reduces voltage to the fuel pump, maybe it's reducing it too much? I would try that before I bought a pump. Also I bought a pump from autozone, it's noisy and never shuts off (but I think my pressure reg may be stuck), get a quality pump if you need it. Coach
