Unhappy 93 Cherokee xj slow crank/won't crank

Hey guys,
I got a 1993 Cherokee and in the recent week or so, it's been cranking slower and slower. It has a 4.0l in it. Everything was doing fine and the it just started cranking like the battery was dying. I took it to oreillys and had the whole starting/charging system tested. While running the battery tested good, alternator good.shut it off to test the starter and it cranked 2-3 times and would not turn over. No clicking. You could hear that the starter was still engaged to the flywheel but it just did not have the power to turn the engine over. So I shut it off and waited a minute, truer it again and started right up and the starter tested good. I shut it off again to re test the alternator and with it not running the voltage regulator tested bad. So I exchanged the battery anyway just to rule it out, and it's still doing it. When the starter wouldn't turn the engin over i could hear what sounded like a rattling coming from the starter, and the voltage regulator tested good while running but bad when not running. Electrical cables seem fine although the starter is covered in some oil but it's been that way for a while and hasn't caused any problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated and if I left anything out feel free to ask.
Thanks, Mitch

My starter was doing the same thing a couple weeks ago, it got slower and slower over a period of about a week or two, then it stopped all together. I got a new starter and everything works fine now.

Sounds like a bad starter. I find that a lot of stuff "tests fine" on a machine at the parts store but in reality may have intermittent issues. Also don't assume it's just one thing, you could have a couple of things going on at the same time. You've done battery, need to do starter and possibly alternator. Not bad really considering the Jeep is 22 years old and those might be original parts!

Is your present starter soaked in oil from leaking oil filter adapter seals?
