Default 93 Cherokee stalling when idle

I have a 93 cherokee with a 4.0 and it stalls when idling. I recently had to replace the water pump and once I did i noticed that engine wants to stall but only when it is idling. It would happen before I changed the pump but only when the engine was at normal operating temperature. I can keep it going if I put it in neutral and keep the rpm's higher but that is the only way. I watch as the temperature rises and when i am at a stop light the oil pressure, rpms and battery power gauges all drop and you can feel the engine starting to stall. i don't have much money so i'm hoping I don't need a major repair. Can anyone help me with some ideas as to what it could be? I was told that it probably isn't the fuel filter. The engine normally idles at 500 rpm.

Check the adjustment of the IAC and the TPS if they are clean and adjusted then you can go from there.

Sounds like you need to clean out the sludge from your throttle body. Happens all the time at the shop. Get some throttle body cleaner (carb cleaner) and take off the inlet hose at the throttle body. Spray, brush, wipe until it looks new. Disconnect the battery for a minute and reconnect. Start the motor WITHOUT TOUCHING THE THROTTLE and let it idle to re-learn idle motor position and put her back together!

This stuf they mention is real easy to do. If you havnt done any of this there are some writeups in the tech section. The adjustment of the TPS would be my concern for your problem. TPS= Throttle Position Sensor. I am not familiar with the adjustment of a HO motor so I cant help you there but when I did my Renix i just looked it up took maybe 20 minutes and my jeep was running fine again.

Now that you mention it, it was just the carb, he could've gotten a newer XJ with EFI but had to have the older One just so he could put on a carb scoop with butterflies, got the scoop but it's ment for a V-6/8 engine so he can't figure out how to put it on and make the butterflies open/close. Thanks for making me realize that Blue.
