Battery reads 12.5.....it will push start ok....its not like a rapid clicking from a low battery...just when you turn the key...one click

Well then that can mean other things like maybe a nuteral saftely swich is bad. Depending on what tranny you got it can be a $12 part or a $300 part. Best bet install a push start button. Try putting it in nutral and then turn the key is it starts then that would most likely mean your nutral saftey swich is starting to go out and I would do the push button start and just by pass that.

Ok think we got it figured....seems the positive cable is bad...used a jumper cable going from positive battery post to positive starter terminal...started right up....so bad cable?
108600 miles on the Jeep. Manual transmission too. Can only start it by push starting it since lost ability to start it normally.
JUST LAST NIGHT.....
I by mistake tried to start the Jeep while I was in gear. The Jeep wasn't in neutral. Of course, the Jeep jumped forward. That was expected. However,
Then, when I tried to start the Jeep while it was in neutral I just got the same type of click noise pfcperry17 got. I am unable to change the current problem; it is not intermittent.
I am short of funds; would like to fix this myself. If I can avoid buying another starter I would like to do so. I would really appreciate some advice.
Thanks so much!

Now that really sounds like the neutral safetly switch to me. Like I said before depends on what tranny that is in it on how much it would be. If the rig is able to start by crossing the starter then just get a push button from any auto store and some wire and bypass all that run it to the starter. That is the easiest and cheapest way to fix that problem and if you hide it somewhere under you dash or something it is also now a safetly feature to keep people from being able to steal your rig.
