Default 92 Cherokee Laredo wont start

Hello all! I'm having some trouble with my 92 Cherokee Laredo. The other day it would start, but it would just barely turn over and sounded like it wasn't going to make it right before it would crank up. I tried it quite a few times and wound up killing the battery. I would turn the key and the engine wouldn't even try to turn over, but I would hear a single click come from the engine. After replacing the battery, It still had the same problem as before, having a hard time turning over. I wasn't able to get it to start after I changed the battery. The terminals and battery cables look good and I cleaned the corrosion off. I was wondering if the next logical step would be to remove the starter and get it checked? Thanks.

Getting the starter checked sounds like a good logical next step.

Is this the starter?

And if it is what's the best way to get that bad boy out of there?

That is your starter. Sounds exactly like what happened to mine a week ago. And a new starter fixed it.

I was able to get it to start by shorting the positive and negative terminals on the starter with a screw driver to get me to the auto parts store.

Yes thats the starter. My suggestion is to buy a Chiltons manuel from the local auto store for step by step. Be prepared to get dirty

Did you clean the cable ends at the starter and engine block too?

How did you clean the corrosion off? Remove the terminals and wire brush the daylights out of 'em?

That also could be corrosion inside of the jacket or jackets on the cables to the battery. You can check resistance across those wires.

Fix the oil leak and make sure all the cable are good. The solenoid doesn't like to be soaked in oil. It tends to get burnt on the contacts and cause problems.
