Default 92 Cherokee dies randomly

Hey fellas,
I have had my Cherokee with a 4.0HO since May. I notice once it gets to a certain point on fuel level it starts to die. Sometimes when it's just filled up, sometimes when it's about 1/3 left in the tank. In between it does fine. Yesterday it died twice and once it wouldn't start for a while. I was thinking fuel pump, but thought I'd get the pro's thoughts. Anybody dealt with this issue? Please and thank you.

That is exactly how my YJ acted when the fuel pump went out. Most frustrating trouble shooting ever. Sometimes it was weeks without any problems, other times it was several times a day. Replaced the pump and never had another issue.

You can rent a pressure tester for free. Beats shooting the parts cannon at it.

Test it multiple times, like 6 or 8. It is probably intermittent.

I didn't think of it either, until I was testing with my son operating the key and I was outside watching the pressure. We mis-communicated, and had to repeat the test, and that's when I caught the fact that two results were different. So we did it about 8 or 10 times. It was good sometimes, and a little bad sometimes, and really bad other times.

It was an eye-opener for me!

I pressure tested mine and it was fine. Until it wasn't. It was on the lower end of the range if I remember correctly, but it tested out with the same pressure over and over, and would start fine. Then I would drive to the store and it would die. I danced around every other possible cause for a month, and finally just bought a new fuel pump. It took 2 hours to install (ran the tank just about empty) and never had another problem. I also fixed the gas gauge while I was in there.
