'90 XJ AW4 doesn't go into 2nd gear in 1-2
Hey guys, I've been wondering for awhile now what to do to be able to get 2nd gear to function when I have the shifter at the lowest setting 1-2.
The transmission works great and I don't have other problems with it, only that no matter how high I go speed/RPM wise in 1-2, it will never shift over into second gear. Thanks in advance for the help, it's greatly appreciated.

Does it shift into second when you are in drive or go from first to third? I just replaced my AW4 solenoids. My transmission was shifting from first to third while in drive and would not shift into second if I had the shifter in 1-2. Replacing the solenoids cured the problem.

Yes, in "3" and "OD" it cycles through all the gears correctly, the only time I have a problem is when I'm in 1-2, it won't go into 2nd gear.

Can't help you there. Mine wouldn't go into second regardless of how you tried. I replaced the solenoids and all is good now. Try to find the post that explains the sequence in which the solenoids work. It may still be possible that one may not be functioning properly. Hope you find a solution.
I think I saw the sequence over on NAXJA's website. Do a search there.

Well, I went ahead and tried to test the 4000 RPM gear switch point but man it seems to be pretty high at 3000 RPM and I really didn't want to chance it and go as far as 4000 RPM, just seems high and way past the point I'd ever want it to change into 2nd gear lol.

I asked this same thing once. Cruiser told me it should around 4500. I was also worried about revving so high. Don't worry. I do it regularly now. You should be able to bounce that motor off the rev limiter without problems. Not saying you should or that it's good to do. If it doesn't shift by 4500 I'd start looking for problems though.

Thanks guys definitely appreciate the info. I just never would have thought that it would wait that long before shifting into 2nd gear but apparently that's what they're made to do. I'll just have to push it further in first going down our hill in the mornings if I want to use a lower gear. I just wanted to go down in 2nd around 25mph or so without it being revved so high and it could slow me down with the transmission instead of my brakes the whole way down.

I have a '98 XJ and I've experiencing the same thing. Did you ever test it at 4500rpm and did it shift to 2nd? And I wonder what happens after you let the rpm drop back below 4500, does it shift back to 1st?
