90-96 Overhead Console Lights?

I've got a 92 Laredo which has the overhead console. When I open a door, only the rear "map lights" come on (they also have a button to turn them on when the doors are closed).

I was wondering if the front lights above the driver & passenger seats are also supposed to come on when a door is opened and mine are just broken? They turn on when I press the button, but I would love it if they came on when the doors opened too. If they aren't supposed to, I may add in some strip lighting somewhere along the console to add some extra light up front.

Side note: has anyone ever gone in and gotten a new keyless entry remote for a vehicle with the keyless dome in the console but no remote to program it with?

Thanks

As for the keyless remote. I have had a few keyless remotes for my 96 XJ and they all work with my entry system. The programming is easy. As for finding an aftermarket IR fob, I really don't know of one so you are at the mercy of online sellers of the originals and they are asking crazy prices for them. I have read online of people that have somehow installed a RF system to replace the stock system. Maybe try doing a search on some of the XJ websites.

On my 95 it's exactly the same, lights above the front seats only turn on when you press their buttons.

The doors operate the rear overhead lights, front footwell lights and rear cargo light.

Thanks so much for your answer! Do you, or anyone else, know how the wiring is set up to trigger the rear dome lights to work with either the door or button? I'm thinking about tapping into the power to those rear dome lights and adding secondary LED lights up front, but I only want them to come on when you open the door, not also when you press the button for the rear dome lights.

Also, thanks JPK for the info on the keyless. I might look into finding a fob for mine.

So to the best of my understanding, a lot of things between 90-96 are the same so the wiring colours I use are from the 95 FSM. If your colours are different, a multimeter could easily help you work out which colour matched the descriptions.

All of the interior lights have a constant +12V feed running to them. The rear 2 lights have 3 wires, Pink (+12V), Yellow (door/delay module ground) and Black (switched ground). In your case for some front LEDs, you would want to take a live feed from the pink wire, and your door ground from the yellow wire.

This is exactly what I needed! Thank you so much! If it's that simple, I'll probably just run that yellow up to the front map lights.

This also solidifies my need to purchase a FSM!

You can find a number of FSM's here, none listed for 92 but a lot does move between years in certain areas.
