Default 89 XJ Headlight Switch

My 89 XJ Ltd. is new to me and I am wondering if my headlight switch is failing and should be replaced before total failure. The switch works, including the delay on exit feature, but the rheostat (?) in the switch that controls the ability to dim the dash lights is non-op. They are on but any attempt to dim them causes them (dash lights) to go totally off. The dome light portion works. This is not a concern for me as it is as I like them as they are, but am wondering if this is a first step in the switch failing and if installing the Hella H4 and Putco harness upgrade I have ordered will have any impact on the switch.

Replace it and then do a headlight harness upgrade.

Yes, The harness and Hellas are enroute. Saw another thread where the upgraded lights/harness caused the delayed headlight off feature to go stupid; is this typical, should I remove that relay(?).

No such issues on our super simple Renix Jeeps.

Appears the lower dash panel has to come out to get to the headlight switch, can't get a hand up in there. And, of course, there's a screw that won't come out to get the panel out.

Got it, what a PITA. the wiring harness for the switch connects at top of switch and there is about 1/2" of slack in harness, have to remove the connector and open the retaining clips blind in space for a midget. Guess I should be glad every plastic piece came off without breaking......
