89 starts hesitating at speed 65mph only
runs great till i let my foot off the gas on the freeway 65mph, then starts hesitating alittle bit. if i step on the gas it goes away. if i lift completely it goes away too. if i drive faster, like 70-75, then it doesn't do it anymore either. have read the threads, i have never changed O2 sensor, i have gone thru and replaced all the ground wires, which eliminated all the starting issues. and, it used to be waaaaay worse, and hesitate around town till i replaced the cap and rotor.
also, it was worse and i noticed that the distributor wasnt bolted down tightly! once i tightened that it almost went away. i have a new coil too. but i guess my question is ....
think my dizzy being loose messed up the gears on either it or the camshaft? i am thinking replacing it will fix everything.

i take mine out for an inspection once in a while. my gear is definitley getting worn out, and the tang for the oil pump looks rough too, but, my heep still runs like a champ with no hesitation or bucking at any rpm...so...dunno. if you do a lot of freeway driving, and your tps always sees a certain position, maybe its getting a flat/dead spot somwhere??? i would do a sweep with it on an analogue meter and look for any hiccups that way.
good luck.
good luck.

it's more like 'lurching' than hesitating.
is there a chance that it is something to do with the overdrive switching? is there some way i can disconnect it so i can eliminate that possibility. it seems like it is trying to shift, then doesnt shift, shift, not shift. i dont get it but that might be a better way of describing it.

Did your distributor have a tang on it so it could only go on one way and not turn?
Ever do plug wires?

Even if the oxygen sensor is not related, if it is the original on an 89, I'd replace it. It certainly doesn't owe you anything after 24 years!
