Cruiser, I know youve been around the block a few with these jeeps, do you think that the CPS could be a cluprit but only when its getting hot? like i said when its cooled off it starts normal, but when its been driven for a while and shut down then restarted its as if the battery is drained, just a much slower crank time.

BTW: Went to three other places and had the charging system checked and it checked good every time.

Very well could be the CPS. One way to tell would be to test the output voltage when it won't start. Have you ever checked the output voltage at all? That could provide a clue.

i see this on some of the smaller dc motors here at work. the brushes wear out and the motors wont start, or start slowly even with a vfd. new brushes and they work. If i were in your shoes, i would replace the starter anyway, its like 23 years old...

And hankthetank is correct that a hot starter could be responsible for the slower cranking speed.

Default Try the Starter relay. .

I know this is an old thread, but people use old threads to help fix their Jeeps. I had the same exact problem, I replaced almost everything. It ended up being the starter relay, it was old and not making good contact, not giving the starter all the amps and volts it should get.
