anybody know what are the problems with an 89 cherokee, do they crow hopp on turns? can I get lockout hubs for it? or leave it alone, any problems with this vehicle? I am thinking about buying one. I had a 94 that was a pile of junk, cvs going out, crow hopping, electrical problems. I hope the 89 is a little better built. all info welcome. thanks

Sounds like who ever the PO was for your old Jeep did not take very good care of it. But the Renix era Xj's are great (87-90).
As for the front axle, i would recommend a posi-lok setup.

What exactly is crow hopping? I have a 91 Cherokee lifted 6" with 32s, 4.56 gears and Lockers front and rear. I don't believe it has ever crow hopped but, I'm not really sure what that is???????????

He may be referring to the tourque steer effect that 4X4s have, but I don't know???

OK, now Torque Steer. I know exactly what that is. I'm a child of the 80s. You must use at least broken Redneck Slang English with me....LOL. Torque steer is just a by product of a 4WD, man. Nothing to knock your Jeep over. All 4x4s do that. COS, thanks for clearing that up for me.

I have an 89, and if you can find one in good condition, Great for you man. Mine was not well maintained, but we've done a rebuild now, and it runs pretty well. Only issues I could tell you about is all of the vacuum controls. I've heard the vacuum control for the axle can let you down tho..

Thanks for info all ,bought the 89 xj, and it is very decent. crow hopping is when you turn the wheels to the l or right all the way the front will sort of hop in a hard turn wearing out some bearing in your 4wheel drive transfer case according to an old jeeper friend of mine. my 94 grand cherokee was a pile of crap I did like thev8 though. Electric window crapped out 1st week I owned bought another motor still didnt work, in the wiring somewhere. It was a total nightmare with electronic troubles badly built in my opinion, vehicle only had about 130,000 miles.
