Default 89 cherokee leaking gas tank

Looks like I will have to remove it completely. Thought passenger side strap was leaking under it but when I finally got strap off without damage to strap . no visable leak. May have just sealed itself. So will have to remove tank completly to make sure I get it repaired right

anybody that has did this removal please feel free to give me some pointers on how they did it. Ken de Finnish Genius, I wish I was.

Get a big floor jack and put a 2 foot 2x4 to help hold its weight. You'll have to pull the filler hose out of its place behind the fuel lid and then finagle it outta there. Its pretty straight forward. Make sure you have some who can help you.

Drain the tank, unhook the filler neck, unhook or remove the fuel pump/sender, remove both straps, lower tank.

Replace tank... They're cheap.

Reinstall.

I had a small gas leak, on bottom behind brush guard. No punctures or big crack, just a small circle where it was pressured for a long time. Some cheap gas tank putty from Kragens took care of it.

Mine rusted through. Replaced it with a cheapo unit from rock auto. Easy peasy.

If it's leaking, it's for one of two reasons:

  1. Physical damage. (accident or sabatoge, depeding on your personal lifestyle and possibly, employment. )
  2. Corrosion.

If it's not #1, it's #2.

If it's #2, you can patch this particular leak this time, and you'll be dropping the tank to patch another one in the not-too-distant future. If it's rusted through in one place, it's getting close to rusting through in a dozen more.

So the question you have to ask yourself, kid, is "Do I feel lucky today?".

Well, do ya?

Oh, wait... Sorry, wrong script.

So the quesiton you have to ask yourslef, kid, is, "How many times do you want to drop this tank and repair a leak?"

Well, how many, kid?

Gas tanks are cheap.

Oh, yeah. You might bust a strap or two while you're at it.

Straps.
