Question 89 cherokee cutting out

Hi all, my cherokee is cutting out but starts right back up. GAS GAUGE goes to over full when it happens. It started yesterday. Must have killed 8-10 times in 2 miles. I was able to keep it going by restarting it each time
and never came to a stop. If I kept it under 30 mph it ran fairly good but did notice gas gauge going to over full at times.

My computer is down and have been on here as hoot619 but wifes computer is on a different program. I had to register as ken619.

I did have gas tank off in Oct , I'm wondering if just could be a loose

connections on wires coming off tank. I will be crawling in the snow to

check it out but thought I should see if anybody had problem like this.

will be changing fuel filter Monday as I didn't before. I've put better than

a 1000 miles on her since I got her back on the road again. This is the first time I had any trouble since then.. Ken or Hoot 619

Took it for a ride before I did anything to it. Ran beautifully. Now I am stumped. Will check under hood first but when I had the trouble the headlights never dimmed except when I was restarting it. The gas guage did move to over full when I was having the trouble. Also the main road road was kind of choppy not smooth from all the snow we got and it had been plowed...( Newberry Mi in the UP of Michigan) I think I will wait til tomorrow- buy and put the new fuel filter on and add a can of SeaFoam and check my wires coming from tank. After you check the obvious that you already pointed out then it's the usual.

Grounds, grounds and grounds.

Didn't get out of driveway started right up ran good for 2-3 minutes and died; fuel gauge went to the right of full and stayed there. Will not start now. Might make it easier to find problem. 15 degrees outside. Ken

Yeah if the gauge peggs out every time you have this no start issue then it's almost a given a problem at or near the tank.

I'm no mechanic electrician or anything else. If a wire is separated I can put it back together. Will get our Pastor to look at it . He loves to work on stuff. I'll get my garage heated after I shove cherokee in with 4-wheeler . I've got ADD and also a memory that is starting to go to hell. I think the 89 is in better shape then I am. I need a mech. book that reads like See Dick Run. They don't call me a Finnish Genius for the hell of it.

I did wiggle the wires by tank no difference. Need tester Will have him check them out. That stuff on you tube etc and here shows a lot if you can remember which I fail at .

Starter spins it real good, didn't hear the fuel pump didn't have hearing aids in. will check it now. Fuel pump did not turn on.
My son when he got fuel pump to pump when I had tank put back in. He did it from engine compartment with a paper clip. Will see if that works. pump would come on for a second ,when he jumpered it heard a pop and had fuel.. Will try that again also.

heading for a funeral grand nephew 24 days old weighed 1lb 5 oz at birth. Little guy didn't make it Ken

Not to sure about getting holding ring off. I know it comes off counterclockwise . Never did it before. gas lines disconnected sprayed it a few times with PB. Have hammer and lg. screwdriver now what. afraid I'll screw something up Ken

May have to drop tank so I can see what the heck I'm doing.

There are three tabs that stick up in the holding ring. Place the flat head on one and tap counterclockwise. you have to tap it approximately 1/3 turn for the ring to come off.
I just did this yesterday.
When putting it back, careful not to tap hard, or beyond the stop. The ring will deform if you do.

Cruiser, that tank looks like a new one compared to mine. We took tank off and still took quite a while to remove keeper ring. We both thought it would be scrap by the time we finished. It held up ok. Jess got pump changed over to fit . (not a bad idea to take your old pump in when you buy the new one and make sure it is the same ) He got it to fit some filing etc. Stick tank back in after Church tomorrow , I know I had better go Pastor Jessie worked on it today. He is pretty sharp in his field and also knows his way around cars.

I don't think we could have got this one changed if we didn't drop tank. I learned a lot but probably won't remember too much. Ken and thanks all.
