89 to 96 NP231 swap

89 to 96 NP231 swap
okay like the title says we just swapped a 89 231 for a 96 231. now that we got the 96 tcase in we got everything bolted up and in correctly but when we put in ANY gear setting 2H-4L we don't get nothing as far as movement is concerned. it feels like it is stuck in neutral (the tcase). now the 89 231 has 4 vacuum lines that went into the rear housing and had its own cluster, the 96 231 does not. we snipped the lines because we thought we were going to be able to find an adapter at the JY, we messed up. do these small vacuum lines control the Tcase to the point if they arent in the jeep doesn't read that it is in gear? also another thing that we have taken into consideration is that we may have messed up the linkage, it was giving us trouble, but i am positive we would have run across something that initiated the Tcase (between 2H-4L it just stayed in neutral). the last possibility that i am seeing that could go wrong is the transfer case that we picked was bad to begin with.

The problem is you have a 21 spline trans with a 23 spline t-case
all transmisions pre 90 are 21 spline out puts. Unless you have a 4 cyl t-case you have a 23 spline setup.
More then likely the inputs wil not swap from t-case to t-case either do to inpout style change

update: pulled the 96 NP 231 out jeep is sitting for a couple days, waiting to get out to the U-pull it again for a decent feeling Tcase from a 87-89. mobility is tough, no ride + blown knee. GFG.
