Default 88 cylinder head on a 00

Lookin at a 2000 cherokee today...said it has a cracked head.. I have an 88. They both have the 4.0 but I was wondering if the head from the 88 would work om the new one. The reason I ask is because its only $900 for the 2000 and its clean, solid and straight

Give it some time. Not everyone will know what the differences are. Some time it will take a little time until the right person reads you post.
Good Luck.

its not a good idea if i were you id buy the beefed up head from clearwater they have a beefier casting

the reason your head crack was because the casting was changed a little to accommodate a coil on plug configuration as opposed to a distributor and the changed casting made the head weak and prone to cracking in some areas

The 88 head will go OK. You use the manifold and gasket (and everything) for the 2000. BUT! I guess there are mixed posts on adapting the coil packs. (fabbing up a bracket). Some say its a piece of cake, others don't like it.

Anyway the coil packs are the main issue, is what I gather.

EDIT! OOPS! NO, LOOKS LIKE THE 2000 NEEDS A DIFFERENT MANIFOLD AFTER ALL

dont get the 88, hold out for a 91-95 head. the Renix motors use a different intake and exhaust manifolds because the ports are different. You'll still have to figure out what to do with your coilpacks, they should be bolted to your 2000 head.

True^. Due to an improvement in the intake ports the 91 on, HO has something like 8% more power IIRC. If the 88 motor is OK wonder if you could sell it and just buy an "upgraded" (not an old 0331 head) for the 2000. I don't know what's available. The "revised" 0331 has a "tupy" foundry mark inside, under the oil cap btw.
